Linfen, China

Linfen, China has been named the single most polluted city in the world. The city is located in the center of the Shanxi Province and is a city of factories and coal mines. The factories don't meet the same regulations set by U.S standards, they don't even meet the much lower pollution standards set by the Chinese government, and the city is in the middle of a basin which doesn't allow the pollution to disperse. These factories not only pollute the air but the water as well and the people of Linfen depend on that very water to live. Linfen has virtually no tourism and ever since it was named the most polluted city, many of it's residents have left, but a majority are unable to leave as they are family farmers without the means to leave. But with the need for work many live in the city just for the jobs in the factories. But it hasn't always been this way, just twenty years ago Linfen was named the fruit of China and was a city based on agriculture, so much has changed and now the only people that visit Linfen are the people who drive the coal trucks, and if you enjoy having healthy lungs I advise you to stay out of this very polluted Chinese city.
